Zhang Ziyi smiles for today and future

In China, actress Zhang Ziyi is an international superstar. To the world, is an iconic image of China. Zhang dresses in Chinese traditional style on many occasions to show the beauty and elegance of Chinese women. At home and abroad, she is always under the microscope.

Zhang Ziyi was in Greece when the the Olympic flame was lit in front of the Temple of Hera. She came as an invited as a guest, wearing a white, embroidered Qipao.

Zhang Ziyi established her name about ten years ago when she starred in Zhang Yimou's film "My Home Road". But it's not been easy for Zhang to get to where she is today.

As a Chinese, Zhang Ziyi grows more confident as her motherland grows stronger. Her joy is apparent on many occasions. On May 4th, in Sanyan, on south China's Hainan Island, Zhang Ziyi appeared as a runner in the Olympic torch relay. Again people saw her heartfelt smile. She said 200 meters was too short a distance. She joked that if she ran in reverse to slow down the pace, she would have a longer time to run.

In 1998, as a student at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, Zhang Ziyi made her big screen debut in Zhang Yimou's film "My Home Road". The film made her a star in China. Then in 1999, she became known to the world in Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." The leading roles in the film were played by Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeon. Since then, Zhang has worked with some top international directors. She became the most sought after Chinese actress in the international entertainment world. In many ways she is regarded as China's gift to Hollywood.

From her roles as Zhao Di in her first film "My Home Road" to Yu Jiaolong in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", from Ding Hui of "Purple Butterfly" to Xiaomei in "House of Flying Daggers" and Bai Ling in "2046", Zhang reveals an impressive talent and a distinctive acting style.

2005 became a harvest year for Zhang. She won Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards, the Huabiao Awards and the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award. She was also nominated as Best Actress for her performance in Memoirs of a Geisha at the Golden Globe Awards. In April, Zhang was listed among Time's 100 most influential people in the world. At the end of the year, she was listed again, in the Asian edition of Time - among the 14 most influential people.

Her effort step by step has paid off. As a Beijing native, Zhang has always been centred on her hometown and motherland. When the massive May 12 Wenchuan earthquake occurred, Zhang Ziyi was at Cannes Film Festival. She ended her commercial activities and began collecting money for people affected by the disaster. She made a banner "I love China" to help raise donations.

Zhang expects to be in Beijing to watch the Olympic games in August. Her favourites are basketball and diving. She has booked tickets for the first games of Chinese and American basketball teams and the diving finals. If you watch the competitions you'll probably see her signature smile. It stands out in a crowd.

Suicidal Chinese Beauty Queen Linda Chung thought of killing herself

Linda Chung thought of killing herself due to stress

Linda Chung has been a spokesperson of a chinese health product brand for almost a year. She was in the studio yesterday to flim a commercial for the company's new mental health product.

Depression because of not adapting to new enviroment

Speaking of mental health,Linda Chung disclosed that she had suffered depression after had won Miss Chinese International and was being invited to work in Hong Kong. She said when she just moved into Hong Kong, she took a long time to adapt to the new enviroment, she is very lonely and have no friends around. Her workload is very heavy and have to handle alot of things. Because she is a public figure, she hides her feelings and dare not tell the people, gradually because of hiding her unhappiness in her heart for a long time, she almost went crazy.

Long period of not venting her anger made her almost crazy

She told the reporters yesterday that there was once because she was stress, she screamed while washing her face in the washroom at TVB's studio. She became very afraid and frightened because she didn't know why she had scream so suddenly, after the screaming incident, she will hide herself at her hostel and cry loudly. Luckily she was awakened and feel that she should not run away from her problems, she shared her thoughts and feelings with her friends and tried to relax herself by accepting lesser jobs. She also went to the Psychiatrist to cure her depression.

Encourage people to face problems

Linda also expressed that because Hong Kong is a fast paced country, its unavoidable for people to meet with stress and pressure. She encouraged the people to relax themselves and confront their stress in a optimistic way.She also advises that people need to face their problems and not hide it,they should not be afraid to go to the Psychiatrist if they need help.

Sucide because too much stress from her work

Asked if Linda had thought of suicide when she is depressed before, she said "I have actually thought of killing myself after fliming my first 3 series with TVB.[Virtues Of Harmony,Always Ready,Bitter Bitten] I can't seemed to relax myself, the jobs just keep comming non-stop. In the end,i tried to give up and end myself. But i when i was preparing for sucide,i found out that i don't have the courage to die. Scenes of my family,my fans and friends flashed across my mind,i have to thank them for enlightening me."

(Were you stressed because people criticized about your acting skills?)
[i]"Poor acting skills was one of the reasons, but the main reasons was because people had influenced me to set high expectations on myself,i was always fighting with myself and took 'perfection' very seriously, the another factor was because i don't know how to communicate with the people. Now that i learn to trust the staffs and friends,i feel very relaxed. I also learnt that there are no problem that is unable to be solved."

whoa!! this is shocking! thank goodness she did not!!
i hope her confession will help others who are stressed out and thought of suicide 2 change their minds. never imagined she was under so much pressure in those days of being a newcomer...yet she was still able 2 overcome all that and become so successful today! bravo, linda! =)
though i'm not really a linda fan, but knowing she's been through so much...i envy her strength and courage.

Sadly, a lot of people go through the same thing, but yet they lack the courage to admit it, and also the courage to seek help after realizing that they have an issue. I'm glad to see Linda speaking out. It takes a lot to talk about this, and not many people are that brave. I hope she's doing well now.

Linda was really nice and patient... it was really hard to take this pic by myself and I didn't trust anybody else to take it.
